Baltimore dedicates DAV Park

■ In conjunction with Veterans Day, Maryland Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford dedicated a park next to Baltimore’s historic War Memorial to the men and women who became ill or injured as a result of their service.

Representatives from the DAV Department of Maryland were on hand as the space was dedicated as DAV Park, and Washington Headquarters Executive Director Garry Augustine was the keynote speaker for the event that hosted guests from Maryland’s Department of Veterans Affairs, the state’s Air National Guard and the Maryland Military Band.

“Americans must never forget what our veterans have done and continue to do,” Augustine told the audience. “That’s why it is so important—and such an honor—to be here today, as this park is rededicated to our disabled American veterans.”

Baltimore’s historic War Memorial Building—host to the Baltimore National Service Office—was dedicated in 1925 to be a “place of meeting for all veteran, patriotic and civic organizations, a depository for trophies of wars in which our country has engaged, and a tribute to those citizens of Maryland who gave their lives and services to their country.”

“As a Marylander, I’m proud to stand here in front of the War Memorial Building,” said Augustine. “And I am especially proud that from this day forward, DAV Park will be right across the street.”
