Former Army Nurse finds way to support fellow veterans
Army Nurse Corps veteran Karen Bauer considers fellow veterans her family. As a Vietnam era veteran, she wasn’t personally injured in service, but she had the honor and heartbreak of caring for many who were.
Bauer describes her service and homecoming as a pivotal time in her life. She recalls that once they returned home after their service had ended, she and many of her fellow veterans didn’t talk about their time serving our country, choosing instead to gloss over the painful chapter of their lives.
Though she didn’t give it much thought then, she now recognizes the cost of their collective silence. A few years ago, she decided to sign up for a veteran writing class and recalls the experience as being a therapy of sorts, where she and her fellow veteran classmates were finally able to open up about their time serving. She marvels at how they were finally able to begin healing after decades of suppressing the pains and hardships associated with wartime service.
This time of healing and bonding led Bauer to want to do more for her veteran brothers and sisters. When she learned she could make a positive impact on countless veterans’ lives by taking out a charitable gift annuity with the DAV Charitable Service Trust, she didn’t think twice. Now, she is leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion for the next era of veterans through her gift annuity while also enjoying the benefits of a charitable deduction and fixed monthly payments for life.
We were thrilled to honor Bauer through the DAV Guardian Society when she created her legacy gift with the Trust. The DAV Guardian Society is our way of thanking Bauer and our other benefactors when they establish a charitable gift annuity with the Trust or notify us that they have included us in their estate plans. Call our Personal Philanthropy Programs office today at 1-800-216-9802, ext. 1., to learn how you, too, can help your fellow veterans through a legacy gift, and become a member of our DAV Guardian Society. We would love to hear from you.
