Honor

The following poem, by Army Nurse Corps veteran Karen Bauer, conveys her sense of pride in service.

Standard issue military ID But I behold a piece of dignity Grey inscribed metal oval in shape Lump in my throat, no escape Around my neck they did hang Making me part of a unique gang Humbled then, Humbled now Feelings of pride bubble up somehow Dog tags for dead and alive are the same Either way they don’t just represent a name The honor the tags epitomize Lighten my heart and shine joy in my eyes.

The tags sit in my jewelry box, a constant reminder To forgive, to love and be a lot kinder.
