Did you know that more than 100 million job applications are submitted through LinkedIn each month? While this makes the platform the leading professional social media site for job seekers and recruiters, it also makes it difficult for users to stand out from everyone else.
One way to make sure you’re getting the most out of your profile is to utilize LinkedIn’s free one-year subscription to their premium service for veterans (dav.la/zq). Once you have activated your free premium account, be sure to check out all of the learning tutorials available to further your understanding of the platform (dav.la/zr).
With that in mind, here are four tips to help separate you from the pack:
1. Tell a story.
• Your headline should represent you in the best way possible, but succinctly. Your summary shares insight on what drives you and makes you different. Write this section in first person to seem approachable, human and unique— but remember only the first three lines are immediately visible to viewers, so make them count.
• Avoid common buzzwords, like these top 10: dav.la/zo.
2. Supplement your experiences.
• Use your profile to write broadly about past experiences, adding details and context that would not normally fit on a resume of two pages.
• LinkedIn’s new Intelligent Hiring Experience allows recruiters to use a recommended candidates tab that shows the most relevant candidates to their openings. This makes filling out your skills section and optimizing your profile for searches extremely important.
3. If you don’t create, curate.
• Post regularly. LinkedIn isn’t a bulletin board. It’s social media, and social media is all about interaction.
• Follow the organizations and industries that interest you, and repost their updates with your own comments for increased value.
4. Know your competition.
• Use LinkedIn’s search engine to identify the competition and review their profiles to see how they are positioning themselves.
• Build your narrative, support your experiences and recognize LinkedIn for what it is: a social media platform with the potential to be a robust and influential professional portfolio.
With these tips—and your free premium account—you should be wellpositioned to make the most of your LinkedIn profile.
