Purple Heart...
Leo H. Connelly Jr. (center right), a past commander for DAV Chapter 2 in Youngstown, Ohio, was presented the Purple Heart on Feb. 9 during a ceremony in Warren, Ohio. U.S. Representative Tim Ryan (left), Director of Trumbull County Veterans Service Commission Herm Breuer (center left) and Doreen Connelly (right) were there for the ceremony.
On June 18, 1967, Connelly was a soldier attempting to rescue a wounded comrade lying beside what he thought was a dead enemy combatant. The combatant grabbed Connelly, cutting and stabbing him. Despite his injuries, Connelly was still able to rescue his injured comrade before returning to the front line to continue the fight.
“Army Spc. Leo H. Connelly Jr. is the epitome of courage, honor and integrity,” said Ryan, whose efforts were instrumental in Connelly receiving the award. “This Purple Heart is long overdue, but I am thankful that Leo is finally receiving the honor and recognition he deserves.”
