Col. Richard “Dick” Cole—the last surviving member of the Doolittle Raiders—has died at age 103. The Doolittle Raid was the first U.S. counterattack on the Japanese mainland after Pearl Harbor. Cole, who passed away on April 9 in San Antonio, served as co-pilot for Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle during the raid. Even after retiring from the military, Cole was still active in serving his fellow veterans. He helped bring awareness to DAV and its mission when he was at air shows featuring the DAV Air Support Outreach Team and the B-25 World War II era bomber Panchito. “Lt. Col. Cole was a great patriot, veteran and friend to the nation and to DAV,” said National Adjutant Marc Burgess. “He was living history, bridging the generations to connect people Lt. Col Dick Cole with our military history and telling the DAV story. He will be greatly missed.” 36 DAV MAGAZINE | JULY/AUGUST 2019 | DAV.ORG
